The Yobe State Police Command has arrested a trader, Umar Mustapha, for allegedly raping and impregnating his 16-year-old daughter, Fatima Umar, in Maisandari, Damaturu Local Government Area of the state.
Addressing the press in Damaturu, the Command’s Spokesman, ASP Dungus Abdulkarim, said the incident was discovered when attempts were made to terminate the six-months-old pregnancy.
“ We got wind of the incident when some people went to a hospital and attempted to abort the pregnancy.
“ As soon as some gallant men of the command swung into action, they gathered that the person responsible for impregnating the girl was her father,” he said.
The spokesman said the case was under investigation and the culprit would soon be charged to court.
Responding to the allegation, Mustapha, aged 53, admitted committing the offence but said it was the handiwork of Satan.
He expressed remorse and pleaded with the police to temper justice with mercy, considering the fact that he was a first offender.
He, however, denied attempting to abort the child, saying he would never involve himself in murder.
On her part, Fatima said her father started molesting her since 2016.
“ He started having me in 2016 when I returned to his house. I had been staying with my mother before then because they had a divorce.
“ Every now and then, he would make advances towards me and I was afraid to speak out because my mother is hypertensive; it may compound her condition.
“ He stopped the advances shortly, but started again six to seven months ago; that was how I got pregnant.
Cases of rape and sodomy have reached an alarming rate in Yobe.
Abdulkarim told our correspondent that within the last two to three months, over 90 cases of rape were reported to the police across the 17 local government areas.
“ Every week, we receive eight to nine cases of rape, mostly involving minors,” the spokesman said.
He called on parents to ensure they monitor the movement of their children to prevent them from running into rapists.
