Court orders Kano PPRO to pay Bashir N1m as damages for rights violation

A Federal High Court sitting in Kano has ordered the spokesperson of Kano state police command, DSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, for unlawful arrest, torture and detention of a popular social media activist Bashir Bashir Galadanci.

Recalled that the Police has arrested Bashir Galadanci last year over an alleged defamation against DSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, for his Facebook post praising the former PPRO Magaji Musa Majiya.

In his ruling, Justice Obiora of the federal high Court, fined DSP Kiyawa a one million Naira fine for detaining Bashir for more than 48 hours, violating his right.

The court also said Bashir has a freedom of expression as enshrined by the Nigerian Constitution.

The court ordered the police not to arrest Bashir again for the same case and the court asked Kiyawa to tender his apology on radio stations for violating his right.

Other respondents in the case are: Inspector Abba Jakara, Imrana, PPRO’s official driver, former Officer in Charge of Anti Daba and Superintendent of Police Uba Bangajiya.

In a brief reaction on the verdict via his Facebook page, Bashir Bashir Galadanci expressed his happiness over his victory in the court.
