Barcelona have completed the signing of Sergio Aguero on a free transfer, following the end of his contract with Manchester City.

The 32-year-old, who turns 33 on June 2, has put pen to paper on a contract until 2023, and the deal includes a release clause of 100 million euros.

Aguero travelled to Barcelona following Manchester City’s Champions League final defeat against Chelsea, as he underwent his medical before signing his contract with Barcelona.

Joan Laporta has therefore secured the signature of the Premier League’s record foreign goalscorer, although Aguero has struggled with injuries in the last couple of years. In the 2020/21 campaign, he made 20 appearances and scored six goals.

During his time at Manchester City, Aguero won 15 pieces of silverware – five Premier League titles, six Carabao Cups, one FA Cup and three Community Shields – and he also became the club’s all-time record goalscorer, netting 260 goals in 390 games.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola gave Aguero an emotional tribute after the Argentine striker’s final league match for the club, a 5-0 win against Everton that he came off the bench to score two goals in.

“We love him so much,” Guardiola said of Aguero. “He’s a special person. He’s so nice. He helped me a lot … We cannot replace him, we cannot. There are many players in this club – Joe Hart, David Silva are others – who helped us to be this club. We have his legacy. He showed his quality in 30 minutes.”

This will be Aguero’s second time playing in Spain, as he made 230 appearances for Atletico Madrid between 2006 and 2011, in which time he scored 100 goals. He also won a Europa League and a European Super Cup.

Aguero is set to be presented as a Barcelona player later before heading to South America to join up with the Argentina squad ahead of this summer’s Copa America.

There, he will see his good friend and now teammate at club level, Lionel  Messi.
