The management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Nigeria said it’s a clear case of misinterpretation while reacting to reports making rounds on social media about the scheme’s intentions to mobilise corps members for war.

This was contained in a press statement signed by Emeka Mgbemena, the Deputy Director (Publications) for Director of Press and Public Relations of the NYSC and made available to Journalists today, 4th June 2021 in Abuja.

“The Director-General had stated that in line with the National Defense Policy, Corps Members are like soldiers on reserve, because their education, exposure and sophistication, can make them easily adaptable to military training.

Director-General of the Scheme, Brigadier General, Shuaibu Ibrahim, while reacting to moves to scrap the NYSC scheme, said corps members were part of the national defence policy of Nigeria and could be mobilised for war.

However, the NYSC affirmed that Ibrahim never said corps members were being mobilised for war as it has been reported.

He charged corps members to remain focused and patriotic, and also prayed for the spirit of NYSC to live in all Nigerians.

Stressing that the scheme will continue to safeguard the wellbeing and interest of corps members at all times.
