The Lagos State Olympic bound athletes both home-based and foreign-based have received cash donations to prepare them ahead of next month’s global sports tournament, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics holding in Japan.
Two Olympic bound foreign-based athletes were supported with the sum of N5,000,000(Five Million Naira) each, while four home-based Lagos athletes, Hammed Koleosho, Anuoluwapo Opeyori, Godwin Olofua and Adijat Olarinoye were supported with the sum of N2,500,000 (Two Million Five Hundred Thousand Naira) each.
Also, medalists who represented the state at various track and field events, indoor and outdoor events at the last National Sports Festival, Edo 2020 held in Benin, Edo State, last April were given cheques of N146,000,000 (One Hundred and Forty-Six Million Naira.
Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the state Governor rewarded the Team Lagos gold medalists in individual sports with N750,000 each, silver medalists were given N500,000 each, while all bronze medalists are to collect N350,000 each.
Team sports gold medalists were rewarded with N2,000,000, silver medalists rewarded with N1,750,000, while bronze medalists were awarded N1,500,000.
While presenting cheques to the athletes, Governor Sanwo-Olu urged them not to rest on their oars in excelling and achieving greater heights in the Tokyo Olympics next month.
Recall that Team Lagos won a total of 125 medals at the last National Sports Festival tagged Edo 2020 in April.
The Governor also announced the donation of a 3-bedroom flat at the Babatunde Fashola Housing Estate, Iponri to the first and only individual Olympic Gold Medalist in Nigeria Chioma Ajunwa at the Atlanta 1996 Olympics.
Announcing the house reward, the Governor informed that the donation was to fulfil the 25 years pledge made by the then government of Lagos State which has been left unfulfilled.
