Four policemen have reportedly lost their lives during an attack by suspected Easterner Security Network (armed wing of IPOB) gunmen on the Police Area Command in Nnewi, Anambra State.

NAN reports that the attack is alleged to have been carried out by the suspected ESN members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on Monday.

A spokesman for the Anambra State Police Command, Tochukwu Ikenga, said his office is yet to gather the full details of the incident. He, however, said that the police battled the criminals and warded them off.

According to sources, the gunmen stormed the Police Area Command on Monday afternoon and met a fierce gunfire exchange from security operatives on duty, which lasted for more than one hour.

An eyewitness alleged that the gunmen came to the police facility in about seven vehicles, and have caused serious restlessness among residents in the area who scampered to safety.

An eyewitness who pleaded anonymity told newsmen that the gunmen seemed to have overpowered the security operatives because they made away with some of their arms, long before reinforcement from the Nigerian Navy arrived.

He said though the military operatives tried to go after them, they weren’t caught.

But the police could not immediately respond to the claim at the time of filing this report.

The attack is believed to be a reprisal for the killing of two suspected members of IPOB on Sunday morning.

The attack comes amid a sit-at-home order   by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

IPOB had said it would enforce a lockdown every Monday, from August 9, in the south-east until its leader,  Nnamdi Kanu is released.
