The 13th of August of each year is marked as the world International Left-Handers’ Day, this day is celebrated every year to acknowledge those who, unlike the majority of the population, are born left-handed or as some will say ‘lefties.’
Although only 10-12 per cent of the global population are left-handed, they, however, include great personalities like Barack Obama, Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey, Napoleon Bonaparte, Leonardo da Vinci, Aristotle, Mother Teresa, Sir Isaac Newton, Walt Disney, Charlie Chaplin, Albert Einstein, Pablo Picasso, Mahatma Gandhi and Mark Zuckerberg amongst several others.
International Lefthanders Day was first observed by Dean R Campbell in 1976 to bring to notice everyday issues that lefties face. He was the founder of Left-Handers International Inc. and since then the day has been celebrated every year.
To mark the left-handed day in 2021, let us look into some extra unique abilities that come with being left-handed.
Generally, Left-handers use the right side of their brain more than right-handed people do and due to that, left-handers have 100 per cent ability to recover faster and almost instantly after a stroke, they also have the ability to multitask.
It is rather easy for lefties to be multilingual because left-handers use the left side of the human brain which controls the human language function. Since left-handers depend lesser on the left side of the brain. they recover their speech abilities faster after a stroke.
Left-handers have certain advantages in terms of sports, they excel in games such as baseball, soccer, tennis and fencing, oftentimes they have an edge over their right-handed opponents.
On the computer, left-handers have improved typing abilities. On a QWERTY keyboard, research has shown that lefties can type over 3,000 English words by solely using the left hand, whereas only around 300 words can be typed with the right hand, which is why most typed letters are towards the left side of the keyboard.
Sadly, many cultures and countries around the world disapprove of left-handers, while some thought it to be unnatural, others consider it a curse. For example, in some eastern countries like India or in the Middle East, left-handedness is considered rude.
And in the UK some left-handed children get forced to use their right hands.
These beliefs have over the years being discouraged, left-handers are normal, intelligent and gifted people. It has been proven that being left-handed is nothing to be shy of, studies have also shown that artists like painters, musicians and even architects plus some highly intelligent persons of the society are mostly left-handers.
Left-handedness can be determined by a person’s genetic traits, though a study at Queen’s University, Belfast revealed that if a foetus chooses to suck its left hand while in the womb, it will grow up to be left-handed.
