A Journey in Service: Babangida’s autobiography as an anticlimax?, by Engr. Bello Gwarzo Abdullahi, FNSE

An anticlimax? Or how can we describe the Autobiography of General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida titled “A Journey in Service?”Given the pivotal roles played by Babangida in Nigeria’s history, writing an autobiography is poised to elicit a plethora of reactions – positive or otherwise, and the more diverse the responses, the better.

This is crucial as the volume of reactions will determine the level of interest garnered by the book, enriching the nation with varying perspectives on the challenges of leadership. In practical terms, exercising caution and discretion when faced with challenges is imperative, and certain narratives are best kept out of the public domain to avoid controversies. However, an alternative viewpoint suggests bringing all aspects to light to serve as instructive lessons for others.

In this context, Babangida elucidates the rationale behind his actions during his Presidency and leaves it to the public to pass judgment. The issues raised in the book are likely to have enduring implications both presently and in the future.

President Babangida is often perceived as shrewd by many, while others regard him as a magnanimous leader who acted in the best interests of the nation. He is known to bide his time before making decisive moves. Throughout his tenure, numerous individuals, did not view him as a leader working towards positive transformation in the country. His leadership style frequently came under scrutiny, with doubts lingering about the sincerity of his motives.

For instance, during the implementation of structural adjustment programs, there were concerns about the impact on the common citizens and the economy at large.

President Babangida’s era was characterized by a series of contentious events that significantly influenced Nigeria’s political landscape. From the liberalization of the economy, Nigerian political bureau of 1986, to frequent alterations in the political transition plan, his leadership was marked by consistent goalpost shifts.

The moniker “Maradona”that became associated with him symbolized the crafty tactics employed during his rule. The repercussions of his actions were profound, resulting in political and economic problems, and a widespread erosion of trust in the government.

Prior to assuming power, President Babangida meticulously studied the elites, and when he made his move, he was hailed as a hero. The transition to civilian rule was fraught with uncertainty and manipulation, characterized by shifting goalposts ostensibly to create confusion and perpetuate himself in power. Every conceivable move was made to frustrate the transition program.

This translate in to Babangida’s suspicious judgment and flawed decision-making process. This state of affairs continue even after the formation of Interim National Government (ING) of Chief Ernest Shonekan as evidenced in his choice to step aside and entrust General Abacha with stabilizing the government. Such actions raise pertinent questions about his intentions.

The political landscape during Babangida’s rule was marked by uncertainty and power struggles, with various factions vying for control and influence.

“A Journey in Service”offers a profound exploration of the complexities of leadership, power dynamics, and the repercussions of political maneuvering. It serves as a poignant reminder of the significance of transparency, integrity, and accountability in governance. For no matter how long it takes history will either be kind or otherwise in whatever we do.
