The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has named five new Imams for the Abuja National Mosque, including two Igbo Muslims, a significant milestone for representation in the leadership of the mosque.

The appointments were announced on Tuesday in Abuja by the NSCIA Secretary-General, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede.

The new Imams are Professor Ilyasu Usman (Enugu State), Professor Luqman Zakariyah (Osun State) Dr Abdulkadir Salman (Kwara State), Haroun Muhammad Eze (Enugu State) and Professor Khalid Aliyu Abubakar (Plateau State).

Professor Oloyede explained that the appointments were made after a thorough evaluation by the General Purpose Committee and endorsed by the National Fatwa Committee.

He remarked, “The NSCIA, since the establishment of the National Mosque in 1984, has been appointing, in succession, qualified Muslims who are worthy in character and scholarship to oversee the spiritual activities of the faithful.”
