Adedamola clinches PDP governorship ticket as  Gov Adeleke’s exit

Story by Mercy Adaje

Adebayo Adedamola has emerged as the Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship candidate for the 2026 Osun election, securing a sweeping victory at the party primary held on Tuesday in Osogbo.

Adedamola scored 919 of the 957 votes cast, with 20 declared void. Announcing the results, the chairman of the primary committee, Humphrey Abba, noted that one of the aspirants had withdrawn earlier, adding, “The candidate that got the remaining votes is Adebayo Adedamola with 919 votes and stands elected and returned.”

This development comes despite the appearance of outgoing Governor Ademola Adeleke’s name on the ballot, even after publicly resigning from the PDP. Voting commenced after delegate accreditation ended at 11:35 a.m., with the committee secretary, Sunday Solarin, explaining that although Adeleke’s name remained on the ballot, votes cast for him would be wasted due to his resignation.

Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission and a monitoring committee led by Humphrey Abba from the PDP national headquarters were present, alongside heavy security from the DSS, police, and NSCDC.

Adeleke’s resignation letter—dated November 4, 2025 and addressed to the PDP Ward 2 Chairman in Ede North—cited the ongoing crisis within the national leadership of the party. He expressed gratitude for the party’s role in his political career as senator and governor. His spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, confirmed the governor’s exit.

Osun PDP Chairman Sunday Bisi had earlier told journalists that the internal crisis had disrupted the initial December 2 primary schedule and suggested that Adeleke might not seek the ticket unless the party’s issues were resolved and properly recognized by INEC.

According to INEC’s timetable for the August 8, 2026 Osun poll, political parties have until December 15 to submit the names of their governorship candidates.
