AFCONQ: Nwabali to miss Rwanda clash after father’s death

Story from Victor Itodo ABUH

Super Eagles coach Augustine Eguavoen has granted first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali permission to miss the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Rwanda following the death of his father, Chief Godspower Onyekam Abali.

Nwabali, aged 27, shared the sad news of his father’s passing on social media on Friday. Chief Abali, a former chief surveyor, died at the age of 67.

Team Administrator Dayo Enebi Achor confirmed that Nwabali has been excused from the match but will be present at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium to support his teammates.

With Nwabali unavailable, the competition for the starting goalkeeper position now lies between Maduka Okoye, who plays in Italy, and Amas Obasogie, based in Ethiopia. The Super Eagles are preparing for the crucial qualifier against Rwanda.
