AGILE project builds 52 educational institutions in Borno

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has revealed that the state government has used N16 billion to build, upgrade, and equip 47 schools out of the 52 schools supported by the World Bank-funded Adolescent Girl Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE).

Governor Zulum announced this on Tuesday while opening six schools constructed by the Borno State

Government and the launch of school supplies at the Government Day Secondary School, Maiduguri.

“These AGILE projects are initiatives of the Borno State Government as they were funded by a $60 million loan from the World Bank under AGILE, with a 25-year payment period and a 5-year grace period,” Zulum stated.

The Governor mentioned, “The AGILE programme will significantly enhance the education sector.

“We have already built 52 schools meeting world bank standards, with only five left to be completed.

”N16 billion was spent on building, upgrading, and equipping these 52 schools.

“Soon, we will construct five additional schools in Chibok, Gwoza, Marte, Bama, and Kaga.

“We are also focusing on training teachers, and unqualified teachers will be transferred to other departments within the local government,” he said.

He assured that every child in Borno will have access to quality education, as the state will provide necessary funding for the education sector, particularly in primary education which forms the

foundation of education.

In his speech, the Borno State Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Engineer Lawan Wakilbe, noted that “Borno State has been recognised as the top state in implementing the BESDA and AGILE projects in the country.”

“Today, we are witnessing the opening of 6 schools, including the Government Day Secondary School (GDSS) Maiduguri, GDSS 707, GDSS 1000 housing Estate, GJDSS Wulari 3, GDSS Gonidamgari, and GDSS Sanongari Alajiri, with GDSS Muna, GDSS Bulunkutu, and others soon to follow,” Engineer Wakilbe said.

He mentioned that so far, 200,000 girls have benefited from the conditional cash transfer of the AGILE empowerment in Borno State, highlighting the commendable nature of the AGILE programme as a federal government project.

Additionally, the National Coordinator of AGILE, Hajya Aisha Haruna, praised the Borno state government for being one of the best implementing states in terms of the AGILE programme in the country.

She assured of ongoing collaboration between the Federal Government and the Borno state government to enhance the education sector nationally.
