Another Lebanon-Israel ceasefire announced after earlier truces failed to halt fighting

The United States has announced a new ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel, marking the latest attempt to end months of cross-border hostilities between Hezbollah and the Israeli military.

The agreement follows a series of previous ceasefire announcements that failed to bring a lasting halt to the conflict. On April 16, Washington announced an initial 10-day ceasefire between the two sides. The truce was later extended by three weeks on April 23 before being prolonged for another 45 days on May 15.

operations and attacks continued throughout the period, with both sides accusing each other of violating the terms of the agreement.

The newly announced deal largely mirrors previous arrangements, under which Hezbollah is expected to withdraw its forces from areas south of the Litani River while Israeli attacks on Lebanese territory are to cease. Similar provisions were included in earlier agreements but were never fully implemented on the ground.

The latest announcement has therefore been met with skepticism by observers, who note that previous ceasefire frameworks produced little tangible change as hostilities continued despite official declarations.

Whether the new agreement will succeed where previous efforts failed remains uncertain, with tensions remaining high and both sides continuing to monitor developments along the Lebanon-Israel border.
