Another Super Eagles head coach resigns

Augustine Eguavoen has stepped down as the interim coach of the Super Eagles, bringing an end to his brief stint in charge of the national team.

Eguavoen, who is also the technical director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), was appointed on a temporary basis to lead the team in two 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda.

According to sources, Eguavoen’s mandate was limited to the two games, and he has now decided to step aside.

His decision comes after the Super Eagles failed to win either of the two games, drawing 0-0 with Rwanda on Tuesday.

Eguavoen’s departure leaves the Super Eagles without a head coach once again, and the NFF will now have to begin the search for a new substantive coach.

In June 2024, newly appointed coach Finidi George stepped down from his position as the head coach of the national team.

This follows the announcement to appoint a foreign technical adviser by the NFF.

The NFF decided to hire a foreign technical adviser because of widespread dissatisfaction with the team’s performances, including a crucial defeat to Benin Republic that left the Super Eagles struggling in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

After George’s departure, the NFF attempted to hire a foreign coach, but the move was unsuccessful.

Eguavoen was brought in as a temporary solution, but his departure now leaves the team in limbo.
