APC and ADC deadlocked in Karu polling units amid low voter turnout
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections witnessed an unusual development on Thursday, as the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ended in a tie at the Supreme Court Staff Quarters polling unit (PU 072) in Karu.
Both parties’ chairmanship candidates, Christopher Maikalangu (APC) and Paul Moses (ADC), recorded 12 votes each, while the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate secured 4 votes. Smaller parties, including the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Social Democratic Party (SDP), and Action Democratic Party (ADP), shared the remaining ballots, reflecting the fragmented nature of voter support in the area.
Officials disclosed that only 32 out of 749 registered voters at the polling unit participated, raising concerns about low voter turnout. Some residents cited security concerns and election fatigue as reasons for staying away from the polls.

The Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), used for voter verification, reportedly operated smoothly, and electoral officials confirmed that no major technical issues were encountered.
Political analysts have noted that ties like this, especially in low-participation units, could significantly affect overall results in highly contested wards. “The small number of votes makes every ballot critical,” said Dr. Musa Abdullahi, a political commentator in Abuja. “Parties need to engage grassroots mobilization more effectively to secure these tight contests.”
With several polling units still counting votes, observers say that close races may become a trend in the FCT elections, highlighting the competitiveness between APC and ADC in certain communities
