Armed thugs attack Benin art exhibition, trap foreign envoys

An exclusive art exhibition hosted by the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA) in Benin City turned violent on Sunday when armed thugs stormed the venue, trapping foreign diplomats and dignitaries.

The event, organized as a private preview for select investors, artists, and international guests, was disrupted by the attackers, who claimed the museum “belonged to the Oba of Benin.” Witnesses said the thugs, armed with weapons, assaulted attendees and damaged property as they forced their way into the restricted area.

Trapped in the chaos were the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria, along with the French and Danish Ambassadors, as well as several investors and cultural figures. Security operatives eventually contained the situation after law enforcement was called in.
