Asisat Oshoala makes history as first African lady to win UEFA Champions League

Nigerian International, Asisat Oshoala, has made history as the first African to lift the UEFA Women’s Champions League cup with club giants Barcelona after the club thrashed Chelsea 4-0 in the final of the UEFA Women’s Champions League in Gothenburg on Sunday night.

The coveted cup which has been dominated for 13 years by French and German Champions League winners since Arsenal lifted the trophy in 2007, saw the Catalonian side make history.

Booming with some level of confidence after their triumph at Women’s Super League last week, the Spanish champions outclassed their English opponents by putting 4 goals past Chelsea’s keeper Mušović to record their first Champions League victory.

Goals from Alexia Putellas, Aitana Bonmati, and Hansen and an own goal from Melanie Leupolz’s confirmed the Spanish champions’ superiority in the first half with all goals coming before the break.

Oshoala was instrumental in her side’s progression to the latter stages of the competition by registering goals against PSV and Fortuna Hjørring in the earlier stages.

The 26-year-old, who was recovering from an injury, was introduced in the 71st minute and almost got her name on the score sheet but the referee ruled out the goal for offside.

Reacting to her win, Europe’s football governing body, UEFA, took to its verified Twitter handle to write:” @AsisatOshoala is the first African player to win the #UWCL!”
