Ortom visits PMB over attack, suspects found to be Jukun as reps order investigation

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom paid a visit to President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday at the State House, Abuja over the recent attempt on his life by gunmen.

Addressing State House Correspondents after the meeting, Governor Ortom said he was pleased with President Buhari’s reaction to the development, adding they shared ideas on how to manage the crisis trailing the development.

Meanwhile, the police in Benue has arrested three suspects who allegedly attacked Governor Samuel Ortom. Confirming the arrest, the Security Adviser to Ortom, Col. Paul Hemba, while conducting newsmen round the scene of the attack on Tuesday said they were found to be Jukun fishermen, not Fulanis.

Hemba said the police team found the fishermen close to the scene of the attack and were being investigated.

In a related development, the House of Representatives has charged the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services to go after a shadowy group, Fulani Nationality Movement, which has claimed responsibility for the recent attack on the Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom.

The lawmakers, at the plenary on Tuesday, unanimously adopted a motion jointly sponsored by members of the House from Benue, who demanded an investigation of the attack and prosecution of the suspects.

Adopting the motion, The House “condemn the armed attack and assassination attempt on Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State by unidentified gunmen on the 20th March 2021,” while commending the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), for his prompt response and immediately ordering an investigation into the attack.
