Bandits attack former deputy gov’s hometown, kill 1 person

The Sokoto State Police Command has confirmed an attack by bandits on Kware town, the hometown of the immediate past Deputy Governor of the state, Alhaji Manir Dan’iya.

Kware also houses the state’s only psychiatric hospital.

The attack, which occurred around 9 p.m. on Saturday, left one person dead and another one injured.

Speaking to newsmen, the command’s spokesperson, ASP Ahmad Rufa’i, said the assailants, who stormed the town in large numbers, shot into the air and set the local grain storage facilities ablaze.

“Two people were shot during the attack; one died shortly after being taken to the hospital, while the other is currently receiving treatment and responding well,” Rufa’i said.

He added that “It took swift reinforcement from our officers to repel the attackers.”

A prominent traditional titleholder in the area, who spoke on condition of anonymity, corroborated the police account. He explained that the attackers infiltrated the town through an entry point of the market.

“They came through the backdoor of our market and began shooting indiscriminately. Part of the market was set ablaze,” he said.

“As they fled, they also set fire on a borehole located at our main cemetery.” He said this was not the first time the town’s market had been targeted.

In a previous incident, a trader was abducted and later released after a ransom was paid.

In another case, the attackers freed a man after realising that he was not their intended target. The attack rekindles memories of a 2021 incident when angry youths in Kware burned down the local police station and killed some suspected bandits who had been held in its cells.
