Bandits burn four villagers to death for rejecting illegal levies

At least four residents were killed in Zamfara State after armed bandits attacked Gwargwaba village, allegedly in retaliation for the community’s refusal to pay illegal levies imposed by criminal groups.

According to a security analyst known as Bakatsine, the attackers arrived in the community at about 6:00 p.m., setting several houses on fire during the raid.

Four residents were reportedly trapped inside their homes and died as a result of the blaze.

Beyond the loss of lives, the attackers also destroyed food supplies, killed villagers’ livestock, and left many families displaced.

Bakatsine said the assault was triggered by the villagers’ decision to reject unlawful levies demanded by the bandits.

“On Thursday evening around 6:pm, bandits armed with sophisticated weapons stormed Gwargwaba village in Nahuce District, Bungudu LGA of Zamfara State,” he wrote.

“Four residents were burned inside their homes, while houses, food stores and livestock were set ablaze. The attack reportedly followed the villagers’ refusal to pay illegal levies imposed by the bandits.”

The incident has once again highlighted the worsening security situation in Zamfara State, despite ongoing military operations and recent emergency measures announced by the federal government.

Residents of rural communities across the state continue to face repeated attacks, with criminal groups frequently targeting villages perceived as vulnerable.
