A 62-year-old chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Umar Moriki, has been killed by gunmen in Gidan Dawa, Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

Moriki was attacked and killed on Saturday, November 15, while returning from a party function in Gusau, the state capital. He was reportedly on his way back to Kaduna when the assailants struck.

According to sources, the late APC stalwart was among party stakeholders who attended a meeting and reception organised in honour of the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, who was visiting the state.

The APC spokesperson in Zamfara, Yusuf Gusau, confirmed the incident, describing Moriki as a committed party member who held several key positions in the state. These included Vice-Chairman of Zurmi Local Government Area, Director-General of the State Revenue Generation, and Special Adviser on Rural Electrification.

Gusau noted that Moriki had been buried on Saturday according to Islamic rites. He added that Matawalle suspended all engagements scheduled in his hometown of Maradun to attend the funeral prayer.

ā€œThe deceased was 62 years old and is survived by three wives and many children,ā€ Gusau said.
