Before Bianca Ojukwu there was Tola Ajayi, by Rasaki Ojo Bakare

Usually, the swearing-in ceremony of a governor or a president in this part of the world attracts media attention due to the significance attached to it but on Thursday, March 17, 2022 the inauguration of the elected governor of Anambra State, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo took another dimension.

While Soludo, a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) was being sworn in to take over the affairs of the state having been democratically elected, the undivided attention of guests seated and viewers watching on television was diverted to witness the physical confrontations between two notable women in the state – the wife of the outgoing governor Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano and Mrs Bianca, wife of late Chukwuemeka Ojukwu who is also a former beauty queen.

As reported in the media, Mrs Obiano who arrived late at the event walked up to Mrs Ojukwu who was sited close to the outgoing governor to exchange pleasantries and after few seconds the conversation between the two women changed to altercations and lo behold, the former first lady received a slap from Mrs Ojukwu.

That singular incident overshadowed Soludo’s swearing-in ceremony as it was amplified by the media.

It is on record that Mrs Bianca’s late husband, Ojukwu had an history with slap. At age 11 or in 1944 to be exact, Ojukwu was expelled from King’s College in Lagos for slapping a white teacher – Mr Sleigh.

After his expulsion, his father sent him to Epsom College, England to finish his High School before proceeding to Oxford University.

However, history reminds us that before the Mrs Ojukwu and Mrs Obiano’s saga, an Ekiti State woman, Mrs Tola Ajayi who clocked 80 years recently, was the first known Nigerian to have slapped the wife of a State Governor.

In her case, she didn’t slap the wife of an outgoing governor, she gave double hot slaps to the wife of a sitting Military Governor.

This occurred when Ekiti was part of the old Ondo State and Bode George was the Military Governor. Mrs Ajayi, a thorough bred extremely beautiful wife of a Judge was in the entourage of the First Lady- Feyi George. There was a little disagreement and Feyi George slapped Tola Ajayi publicly. Mrs Ajayi responded instantly with a multiple of slaps on the First Lady’s robust cheeks.

Mrs Ajayi’s husband, a serving Judge later said he would have sent his wife packing if she didn’t return the slap. The Governor quietly settled the matter with the Ajayis knowing the kind of woman she married. Feyi and her husband separated shortly after they left the government house.

Mrs Tola Ajayi is an indigene of Ikole Ekiti.
