Bill limiting presidential candidates age to 60 passes 2nd reading at House of Reps
The House of Representatives on Thursday, passed for a second reading a bill that could impact some major political figures in the country.
The bill, introduced by Rep. Ikeagwuonu Ugochinyere, seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution by imposing a restriction on individuals over 60 years of age from contesting for the offices of President or Governor.
The proposed amendments outline that presidential and gubernatorial candidates must be no older than 60 at the time of running.
Additionally, the bill stipulates that candidates must hold at least a Bachelor’s degree in their chosen field of study.

Specifically, the bill amends Section 131 of the Constitution to introduce the age limit for presidential candidates and Section 177 to apply the same requirement to those seeking gubernatorial office.
Atiku Abubakar, a presidential hopeful in the country is said to be 78 years of age. Another Presidential hopeful, Peter Obi is 68-years old.
Nigeria’s incumbent President, Bola Tinubu is said to be 72 years old.
It remains to be seen if the bill will be assented to by the President if it is eventually passed by the lawmakers.
