Boko Haram factions intensify deadly rivalry
The rivalry between factions of the notorious Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati Wal-Jihad, commonly known as Boko Haram, has escalated into violent clashes across Borno State.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama revealed in a video posted on X that the groups have adopted a chilling motto: “Kill them wherever you locate them.” The video showcased fierce battles between Boko Haram’s JAS faction and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters, which took place from December 23 to 24, 2024, in several locations, including Toumbun Gini, Mangari, and Metele in Abadam Local Government Area.
According to Makama, JAS fighters stormed ISWAP camps from riverine areas, using boats for their assaults. The footage also revealed weapons seized from ISWAP and significant casualties on their side.

Makama noted that JAS has extended its influence across the Lake Chad Basin Region, taking control of riverine areas in Diffa, Abadam, Kukawa, and Monguno Local Government Areas. On the other hand, ISWAP has shifted its headquarters to southern Lake Chad, imposing taxes on communities in Marte and Ngala areas.
“JAS has retreated into the river basin, consolidating its hold over riverine islands and asserting dominance by imposing taxes,” Makama added, warning of the growing threat posed by these factions to regional stability.
The security analyst also stressed the urgent need for robust maritime operations and improved collaboration among Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) members—Nigeria, Niger, and Chad—to address the escalating crisis effectively.
