Child-trafficker arrested, stolen baby recovered in Imo State

The diligent operatives of Umuaka Police Divisional Headquarters in Njaba Local Government Area of Imo State successfully apprehended a suspect, Bebiana Paulinus, who had stolen a 9-month-old baby girl in Amaiyi Umuaka on Wednesday. The baby has been safely reunited with her overjoyed mother, Precious Duru.

Local vigilantes played a crucial role in the arrest of the suspect, who is a teacher at St. Saviour Catholic Secondary School in Umuaka. The vigilant group swiftly handed her over to the police upon capture.

Rev. Vincent Durugbo, an honorable ex-Nigerian soldier and a resident of Umuaka Community, expressed his deep concern regarding the incident. He disclosed that three suspects, including an accomplice who had provided shelter to the abductor and the baby, have been taken into custody.

Speaking to journalists, Rev. Durugbo revealed, “I have been closely following this case since Wednesday when the distressed mother reported her baby’s disappearance. Initially, I hesitated to involve the police as I had doubts about their efficacy.” He further mentioned that they collaborated with the Umuaka Vigilante group, which launched an extensive search for the fleeing accomplice.

During their search, the team even visited St. Saviour Catholic Secondary School Umuaka, where the suspect was employed as a teacher. “She has been arrested and is currently detained at Umuaka Police Division along with two other connected suspects. Thankfully, the baby was recovered alive from the abductor,” affirmed Rev. Durugbo.

Expressing his disappointment in the rising cases of child trafficking, kidnapping, and other social vices in Umuaka and its environs, the ex-soldier added, “My heart goes out to the community as we have witnessed these heinous acts firsthand. Unfortunately, it appears that law enforcement has done little to address this issue.”

Reassuring the community, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Umuaka, Martins Ekere, confirmed the arrest and gave his word that a thorough investigation would be conducted. It is hoped that this arrest sends a stern message to those involved in such criminal activities, and that the authorities take concrete steps to ensure the safety and well-being of the residents.
