Chinese expatriate orders officer to shoot immigration personnel, FG reacts

The Federal Government has expressed serious outrage over an incident involving a Chinese expatriate who allegedly ordered a Nigerian security officer guarding him to shoot a personnel from the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).

The officer was performing a legitimate duty at a Chinese-owned company when the order was given.

Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, made the government’s position clear during a Stakeholders’ Sensitisation Workshop on the Implementation of the Nigeria Visa Policy 2025 in Abuja.
He condemned the act, describing it as a direct attack on Nigeria and promise that the government would take up the matter with the Chinese Embassy.

Tunji-Ojo emphasized that Nigeria seeks reciprocal treatment for its citizens abroad, noting that no foreigner should disrespect Nigerian officials or laws while in the country. He stressed that the incident, which occurred a few weeks ago, was deeply personal and would not be tolerated.

He also warned that the government would be taking stronger action against foreign nationals violating the country’s laws. The minister revealed plans to automate immigration lists, with foreigners who pose a national security threat set to be blacklisted.
He reiterated that the government would ensure that no company or agent is above the law.

The minister assured that Nigeria would continue to welcome foreign investment and trade, particularly from countries like China, but emphasized that respect for local laws must be maintained.

He also announced plans for stricter enforcement of immigration regulations, with a new expatriate administration system set to launch in May 2025, aimed at improving oversight of foreigners in Nigeria.
