Cholera death toll rises to 18 as outbreak spreads to 7 LGAs in Borno

The Borno state Commissioner for Health, Mrs Juliana Bitrus has disclosed that a total of 559 cholera cases have been established in the state.

Mrs Bitrus revealed this while addressing newsmen in Maiduguri, according to the commissioner “Currently 57 affected individuals are on admission in hospitals across the seven local government areas of the state.

The commissioner added that ”The most affected local government areas include Jere, Gwoza, Kaga, Hawul, Magumeri, Damboa and Maiduguri.

She said, ” Gwoza LGA has the highest figure with 354 suspected cases and 18 deaths.”

Meanwhile, she attributed the outbreak to poor hygiene and sanitation among the rural dwellers, also bad habits associated with open defecation, high concentration of people which is prevalent in the state’s IDP camps.
