Church presents cash gifts to 20 teenage girls for staying virgins
The Wenchi West District of the Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) Church in Ghana’s Bono Region has sparked widespread debate after honouring 20 teenage girls, aged 13 to 16, for maintaining their virginity.
During a Thanksgiving service held over the weekend, the church recognised the girls’ commitment to purity by gifting them an undisclosed amount of money as a token of encouragement.
Speaking at the event, Mrs. Nana Amponsah Poku, District Coordinator of the Young Adventist Women Ministries, explained that the initiative aimed to combat teenage pregnancy and fornication among young people.
“God created you uniquely beautiful, and you must not allow anybody to lure and break your virginity until you marry,” Mrs. Poku advised the girls.

She emphasised that the gesture was meant to inspire other young women in the congregation to prioritise purity and uphold their faith-based values.
While some praised the church’s efforts to promote moral behaviour and protect young girls from societal pressures, others expressed concerns about the potential stigmatisation of those who do not conform to such standards.
The initiative has ignited a broader conversation about the role of faith-based institutions in addressing teenage morality and societal expectations.
