Court overturns decision to dethrone emir Aminu Ado Bayero, others
A Federal High Court in Kano has declared null and void all actions taken by the Kano state government to repeal the Kano Emirates Council Law.
The Kano House of Assembly had repealed the law, leading to the dethronement of Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero as the Emir of Kano by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
Furthermore, the creation of four emirates – Bichi, Rano, Karaye, and Gaya – by the previous governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, was also reversed by Governor Yusuf.

The law was used to reinstate Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano, after his dethronement by Ganduje in 2020.
However, Aminu Babba Danagundi, a key figure in the former Kano emirate, challenged the legality of the law, seeking to have it declared invalid. His counsel, Chikaosolu Ojukwu (SAN), brought the case before the court.
In a ruling delivered on Thursday, Justice Abdullahi Muhammad Liman set aside the government’s actions, instructing all parties to maintain the status quo.
