Cover-up at Potiskum prison as officer impregnates inmate

A disturbing scandal is unfolding at the Potiskum Correctional Centre in Yobe State, where an officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Sani Saleh-Bodejo, has been accused of raping and impregnating an inmate, Blessing Sunday — with efforts reportedly underway to conceal the crime.
According to multiple sources, Mr. Bodejo, an Assistant Superintendent of Correctional Services (ASC II) and yardmaster of the facility, allegedly gained access to the female section at night with the cooperation of a female officer, where he repeatedly assaulted the inmate. Medical reports now indicate that the victim is 27 weeks pregnant.
Despite the seriousness of the allegation, senior officials within the Yobe Command are said to be attempting to suppress the case, with plans to secretly terminate the pregnancy. Insiders reveal that the matter was reported to the Controller-General of Corrections through ACG Zone R, Adamu Yahaya, with the victim at the time estimated to be three months and two weeks pregnant.

Sources said the case only resurfaced during a routine visit by the Zonal ACG, who was then briefed on the situation. The zonal office has reportedly recommended disciplinary action against those involved.
Those allegedly implicated in efforts to bury the case include the State Controller, Abdullah Ibrahim; the Officer-in-Charge of Potiskum Prison, ACC Ibrahim Tafida; and ASC Sani Seleh-Bodejo, the accused officer. Others are IC Shaba Auta, now transferred to the state controller’s office, and additional staff believed to have played roles in shielding the incident.
In an alleged attempt to neutralise the scandal, key officers were hurriedly transferred — with Bodejo redeployed to a non-custodial centre in Jakusko, while Auta was moved to the state headquarters.

A separate source disclosed that prison authorities held a meeting with the victim’s father in what appeared to be a negotiation to silence the matter.
When contacted, Yobe State Controller of Corrections, Abdullahi Ibrahim, denied awareness of the case and ended the call. The Zonal Assistant Controller-General, Adamu Yahaya, similarly refused to comment, while the command spokesperson, Abdullahi Adamu, said he would investigate and provide feedback.
The case continues to raise questions about inmate safety, accountability within correctional facilities, and the culture of secrecy that shields misconduct in the system.
