As part of the effort towards creating awareness on the spread of Coronavirus pandemic in the State, the World Health Organisation (WHO), under its health emergencies programme in Northeast Nigeria, has donated over 400,000 copies of Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials to the Yobe State Government.

The WHO programme manager in the Northeast, Dr Collins Owili, represented by a Public Health Officer, Dr Ibrahim Audu Salisu, while presenting the materials in Damaturu, said the items were provided with the aim of informing the public on the dangers of the disease through robust sensitisation in communities, offices and business places across the state.

Owili said WHO had been providing support for coordinating the COVID-19 response, surveillance, laboratory management, case management, infection prevention and control including risk management in Yobe State.

“As part of our efforts to support the Yobe State, Ministry of Health in the COVID-19 response, the World Health Organisation carried out capacity building to 350 health workers across the 13 general hospitals in the state on surveillance, laboratory case management, risk management, infection and prevention control.”

While receiving the items, the Commissioner of Health, Dr Lawan Gana, commended WHO for the donations, promising to use the items for the purpose intended.

Gana said, “On behalf of the Yobe State COVID-19 Prevention and Control Committee, we are happy to receive these donations from WHO to boost our risk communication activities.  We assure you that we will judiciously use the items for a better result” he said.

The Commissioner further disclosed that the state committee for the prevention and control of COVID-19 under the chairmanship of the state Deputy Governor, Honourable Idi Barded Gubana had been working round the clock towards ensuring that people across the state remain safe and healthy.

Items donated include 200,000 copies of Information, Education and Communication materials, Flip charts, 200,000 copies of infection, prevention and control materials, and 200 pieces of t-shirts and face caps.
