Defiant Manchester United hold Liverpool in 2-2 anfield thriller

Liverpool’s Premier League title charge hit a minor bump as a resilient Manchester United side forced a dramatic 2-2 draw at Anfield on Sunday.

Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah overturned Lisandro Martinez’s shock opener, but Amad Diallo’s late equaliser ensured United took a deserved point in a spirited contest.

The match started brightly for Liverpool, who dominated possession early on. However, United stunned the home crowd in the 36th minute when Lisandro Martinez unleashed a thunderous strike into the roof of the net, breaking United’s six-year goal drought at Anfield.

Liverpool’s response came after the break as Cody Gakpo turned brilliantly to rifle home an equaliser in the 60th minute, bringing the Reds back into contention.

The hosts soon took the lead through Mohamed Salah’s penalty in the 72nd minute after Alexis Mac Allister’s header struck Lisandro Martinez’s outstretched arm. Salah calmly slotted home his 18th league goal of the season.

Just as Liverpool seemed destined for victory, United’s Amad Diallo pounced on a low cross from substitute Alejandro Garnacho to level the game with ten minutes to go.

United almost snatched a winner in stoppage time, but Harry Maguire squandered a golden chance, firing over with the goal at his mercy.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot admitted disappointment: “We should have killed the game earlier. Credit to United—they defended with heart and punished us when it mattered.”

United’s manager Ruben Amorim, meanwhile, praised his team’s resilience: “This performance showed our character. We’ve turned a corner, and this point is crucial for our confidence.”

WHAT’S NEXT?

Liverpool: Despite the draw, they extend their lead at the top of the table to six points, with a game in hand. They will look to bounce back in their next fixture.

Manchester United: The Red Devils climb to 13th and aim to build on this result to move further clear of the relegation zone.
