DG WTO, Okonjo-Iweala pays PMB courtesy visit (Pictures)

The Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on Monday, paid a courtesy visit to President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa.

This happens to be the DG’s first official visit since her confirmation on March 1, 2021, as the first woman and first African to lead the international body.

Okonjo-Iweala who is said to be on a five-day workshop visit to the country, arrived at the Villa in the company of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, the Minister of Trade and Investment, Otunba Niyi Adebayo as well as the Minister of State for Trade and Investment, Ambassador Maryam Katagum.

Also on the delegation were some officials of the World Trade Organisation.

The WTO DG, Dr Okonjo-Iweala, who had served as the Minister of Finance and Supervising Minister of the Economy was received by the Chief of Staff to the President, Professor Ibrahim Gambari.

According to reports, Okonjo-Iweala had held separate discussions with two ministers before meeting with President Buhari.

In her remarks, Okonjo-Iweala promised that the organisation would support Nigeria with capacity building and entrepreneurial products, especially at a time when the country has to diversify from oil.

Adding that the organisation would work with other international organisations such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank to help Nigeria solve its deficits which she said were affecting its infrastructure.

She stated that the WTO was also set to support job creation among youths and encourage women entrepreneurs and that the organisation is already negotiating several agreements on e-commerce.
