DHQ confirms arrest of 16 officers over alleged coup plot, sets up Court-Martial
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed the arrest of 16 military officers over acts of indiscipline and breaches of service regulations, with several of them set to face court-martial proceedings.
The confirmation was made on Monday in Abuja by the Director of Defence Information, Major-General Samaila Uba, who disclosed that the investigative panel set up by the military authorities has concluded its assignment.
According to Maj.-Gen. Uba, the panel found that a number of the officers have serious allegations to answer, warranting further disciplinary and judicial action in line with established military procedures.

“The investigative panel has completed its work and established that some of the officers involved have serious allegations to answer,” Uba said. “They will be subjected to court-martial in accordance with existing service regulations and due process.”
The offences are reportedly linked to allegations of a plot to overthrow the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a development that has drawn national attention and raised concerns about discipline within the Armed Forces.
Maj.-Gen. Uba described the alleged actions as inconsistent with the ethics, values and professional standards expected of personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN). He reaffirmed the military’s commitment to discipline, constitutional loyalty and subordination to civilian authority.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria will not tolerate any act that undermines its core values, professionalism or constitutional mandate,” he said.
The DHQ also assured Nigerians that the situation is under control, stressing that the military remains united, professional and focused on its primary duties of defending the nation’s territorial integrity and supporting internal security operations.
While declining to provide further operational details, the Defence Headquarters said updates would be made available as the judicial process progresses.

A breakdown of the list shows that most of the affected officers are drawn from the Infantry, Signals and Ordnance Corps.
Military authorities said the trials form part of ongoing efforts to enforce discipline and uphold professionalism within the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
