Digital birth, NIN registration will improve access to social benefits – NIMC DG
Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, Director-General and CEO of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), has emphasised the critical role of birth registration and the National Identification Number (NIN) in Nigeria’s development. Speaking at the launch of the Renewed Hope initiative project, Coker-Odusote underscored how these registrations are pivotal for shaping Nigeria’s digital identity.
The initiative, a collaborative effort between NIMC and the National Population Commission (NPC), aims to modernise birth registration processes. Coker-Odusote praised NPC for its efforts in accelerating and digitalising birth registration, describing it as a significant achievement of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
She noted, “Birth registration is not only important for the individual; it is also crucial for the development of the nation.” Digital birth and NIN registration will enhance access to government services, including education and healthcare, for all Nigerians, particularly children under 16.

Coker-Odusote also highlighted birth registration as a fundamental right and a key element of Nigeria’s developmental strategy. She appealed for support from civil society and international partners to ensure the initiative’s success, assuring that NIMC remains committed to providing seamless NIN registration.
Additionally, Coker-Odusote expressed gratitude to First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu for her unwavering support for the NIN and birth registration efforts in Nigeria.
