Don’t accept luggage without knowing its content – NDLEA warns

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has issued a stern warning to travellers, urging them not to accept luggage from anyone without knowing its content.

This caution comes in light of recent incidents where unsuspecting individuals found themselves in trouble due to the contents of luggage they were carrying.

Femi Babafemi, the agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, emphasized the gravity of the situation by recounting an incident involving two students, one of whom was pursuing a PhD.

These students unwittingly became embroiled in legal trouble when bottles of codeine syrup were discovered in luggage they were transporting for a friend studying abroad. Fortunately, the intervention of the NDLEA prevented their incarceration, as the agency ensured the rightful owner of the contraband was apprehended.

Babafemi underscored the importance of exercising caution when handling luggage, especially when it comes from sources whose contents are unknown.

The agency’s efforts to intercept illicit substances, as exemplified by the recent confiscation of opioids concealed among spare parts, highlight the pervasive nature of drug trafficking and the need for heightened vigilance among travellers.

The NDLEA’s warning serves as a reminder of the potential legal consequences and personal risks associated with unwittingly transporting illegal substances.

“By heeding this cautionary advice and refraining from accepting luggage of unknown content, travellers can safeguard themselves from unwitting involvement in criminal activities and protect their freedom and reputation”.

“As air travel rebounds and cross-border movements increase, the NDLEA remains vigilant in its mission to combat drug trafficking and ensure the safety and security of all citizens”.

“Through public awareness campaigns and proactive enforcement measures, the agency seeks to deter individuals from engaging in illicit drug-related activities and promote a culture of responsibility and accountability among travellers”.

“In a world where criminal elements constantly seek new avenues for smuggling illicit substances, vigilance and caution are paramount”.

The NDLEA’s warning serves as a timely reminder for travellers to exercise diligence and discretion when handling luggage, thereby contributing to efforts to stem the tide of drug trafficking and protect communities from the scourge of narcotics.
