DSS demands retraction, apology from Channels TV, DAAR
The Legal Counsel to the Department of State Services (DSS) has issued a notice to two television stations, Daar Communications Plc (also known as AIT) and Channels Television, along with other media platforms, demanding an apology and retraction of reports that falsely claimed DSS operatives invaded the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday.
In a letter dated February 17, 2025, titled “False, Defamatory, and Malicious Publication Concerning the State Security Service (DSS) Regarding Their Presence at the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday, February 17, 2025,” the DSS, through its legal team, Adedipe and Adedipe, requested a retraction and apology.
The DSS Counsel stated that despite the fact that the Clerk of the Assembly invited both DSS and police personnel to secure the Assembly due to concerns over potential attacks by hoodlums, the media outlets ran reports claiming that DSS operatives had invaded the Assembly in a “Gestapo-style” operation.
The Service has given the media organizations a seven-day deadline to issue apologies on their respective news channels five times a day for three consecutive days, or face legal action.
It is important to note that several media outlets had initially reported that the DSS had stormed or invaded the Lagos State House of Assembly to disrupt its proceedings. However, subsequent revelations clarified that the DSS was invited to carry out its official duties.
