EFCC’s Twitter account vanishes amid cyber warfare threats from yahoo boys
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has found itself at the center of a digital controversy as its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, @officialEFCC, suddenly vanished from the platform.
The account, which boasted 2.2 million followers, has been inaccessible for the past three days, leaving users with the message, “This account doesn’t exist.”
Dele Oyewale, the EFCC’s chief spokesman, confirmed the issue and attributed it to a network problem, noting that the agency’s ICT department is working diligently to restore the account.
However, the timing of the disappearance has raised eyebrows, as it comes just days after a group of suspected internet fraudsters threatened to launch a cyber-attack against the anti-graft agency.

These threats were reportedly made on online forums such as Reddit, where some individuals accused EFCC detectives of extortion and vowed to retaliate.
The EFCC has intensified its crackdown on online fraud in recent months, targeting suspected criminals in hotels and university dormitories. While some applaud the agency’s efforts to combat cybercrime, others have criticized its methods, accusing the EFCC of violating fundamental rights.
The disappearance of the EFCC’s handle has sparked speculation about whether it was a result of the cyber threats or a sanction from X for potential violations. Alternatively, the account could have been deactivated by those managing it on behalf of the agency. Despite the social media setback, the EFCC’s other online platforms, including its website, Facebook, and Instagram pages, remain unaffected.
As the situation unfolds, the EFCC continues to navigate the challenges of balancing its anti-corruption mission with the need to respect citizens’ rights, all while facing growing scrutiny from both supporters and critics alike.
