Emir Bayero welcomes ban on Sallah festivities in Kano

The 15th Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, has welcomed the ban on all Durbar activities in the state during the upcoming Eid-el-Kabir celebrations in the state, announced by the state police command.

Neptune Prime reports that the Kano Police Command had on Tuesday announced the ban, citing security concerns, a few days after the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, released a memo inviting district heads and their horsemen to participate in the annual Sallah Durbar festivities.

But in another memo, the 15th Emir, Bayero, welcomed the ban, saying he would fully comply with it.

In a letter signed by Emir Bayero’s Council Secretary, Awaisu Abbas Sanusi and dated Wednesday, 4th June 2025 and addressed to all district heads, Bayero said his decision followed due consultation with various security agencies and his council members.

The letter read in part, “Although we have since cancelled our Durbar in the interest of peace, now we have decided to also cancel all forms of horse race due to reasons that include the recent accident involving our 22 athletes returning from Abeokuta and the recent ban by the police.

“Peace is most important, we must exercise patience and refrain from anything that could cause unrest or tamper with our security,” the letter added.

The Kano State Police Command had cancelled the last Eid-el-Fitr Sallah Durbar in the state after Emir Bayero announced a parallel durbar.

Despite the ban, however, Emir Sanusi held his own Durbar, though using cars, as against the traditional horse riding. He was later invited by the police to explain why he flouted the ban, though the police later withdrew the invitation.
