Emir Sanusi II explains why he can’t support Tinubu’s govt
The 16th Emir of Kano, His Highness Muhammad Sanusi II, announced on Wednesday that he would no longer assist in communicating the benefits of the economic reforms under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, citing the government’s lack of friendliness towards him.
Speaking at the 2025 Gani Fawehinmi Annual Lecture, Emir Sanusi criticized the government for not having credible representatives to explain its policies, and stated that he would not fill that gap.
He added that his decision to withdraw support was based on the government’s failure to act like friends, despite their past relationship.
Sanusi remarked, “I will not help this government. They lack individuals who can effectively explain their reforms, and I will not assist. If they fail to act like friends, I will not act like one.”
The Emir also emphasized that the current economic challenges were a result of decades of poor economic management, though he acknowledged that not all actions being taken now were correct.
He said, “If the government is ready to discuss the economy, I may engage, but for now, I am here to honor Gani Fawehinmi.”
Additionally, Emir Sanusi urged Nigerians to return to foundational values such as integrity and hard work, stressing the need for a focus on personal values rather than superficial distinctions based on ethnicity or status.
