EPL: Chelsea not ready for title fight – Maresca

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has dismissed suggestions that his team is in the running for the Premier League title this season, despite their impressive start under his leadership.

Maresca, who succeeded Mauricio Pochettino in June, has guided the Blues to third in the table after 12 matches, level on 22 points with Arsenal and Brighton. They sit just a point behind Manchester City and trail leaders Liverpool by nine points.

Victory against Aston Villa on Sunday would mark Chelsea’s seventh win in 13 league games, continuing their strong form as they aim to secure a Champions League spot after a two-year absence.

However, the Italian coach, 44, downplayed expectations, emphasising the need for patience and long-term progress rather than immediate title aspirations.

“We Are Not There Yet”

When asked if Chelsea could end Manchester City’s four-year dominance, Maresca replied, “No. I’ve said many times I don’t like to create pressure by saying ‘Yes, we are there,’ because we are not.

“Arsenal, City, and Liverpool are ahead of us. The important thing is to improve game by game and focus on the process. Arsenal have been building for five years, City for nine, and Liverpool have maintained consistency. It’s not about the points or table position right now; it’s about how we grow as a team.”

Cautious Optimism Ahead of Crucial Fixtures

Sunday’s clash between Liverpool and Manchester City offers Chelsea a chance to close the gap on the league leaders, but Maresca remains cautious.

“You have to be realistic,” he said. “There is a visible difference between us and the top teams at the moment.

That doesn’t mean we won’t compete and win games – we will. But the focus must remain on the progress we make as a group.”

Chelsea’s transformation under Maresca has been notable, with the manager forming a cohesive and competitive squad from what was previously criticised as a bloated roster.

As they edge closer to reclaiming their place in Europe’s elite competition, Maresca’s emphasis on growth over quick results highlights his long-term vision for the club.
