Ex-Nigerian footballer Babatunde, 34, stabbed to death in Ireland

Quaham Babatunde, a Nigerian asylum seeker and former footballer, was tragically stabbed to death in Dublin, Ireland, during a violent incident in the early hours of Saturday morning. Babatunde, 34, was fatally injured during an attack on South Anne Street.

Previously, Babatunde had faced accusations of rape in Italy. In April 2018, he was arrested after a three-month police search and charged with sexually assaulting a 22-year-old woman. He was later remanded in custody and deported. A friend confirmed the allegations but emphasized that Babatunde always maintained his innocence.

Babatunde had once been considered a promising footballer, playing for Italian clubs like Monselice and Reggiana Primavera. However, his career was marred by legal issues, including an arrest in 2019 for brawling and immigration violations. He was subsequently listed for deportation due to his illegal immigrant status.

The fatal incident in Dublin reportedly began as a dispute over seating arrangements in a nightclub. Shocking footage from the scene showed a masked man wielding a large knife. Babatunde, described by friends as a peacemaker, was stabbed in the chest and later died. Another man was also injured but survived.

An Garda Síochána’s investigation led to multiple arrests, including a 23-year-old suspect who was apprehended in Belfast while trying to flee to Liverpool. Two other suspects were also taken into custody in Dublin.

Friends of Babatunde expressed shock over his sudden death, remembering him as a caring person who had been working to turn his life around. They revealed that he had recently taken an exam to work as a security guard in Ireland and was not involved in the altercation that led to his tragic death.

Babatunde had been one of the first residents of the Ballyogan International Protection Accommodation Centre and had no known family in Ireland. His killing has raised concerns about violence in Dublin’s nightlife and the challenges faced by asylum seekers abroad.
