Ex-NLC chairman slumps, dies during alleged dispute with police

The Edo State Police Command has ordered an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the untimely death of Comrade Kaduna Eboigbodin, a former Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), who reportedly collapsed at a police checkpoint in Benin City.

According to the Command’s Spokesman, SP Moses Yamu, the directive for inquiry was issued by Commissioner of Police, Umoru P. Ozigi, on Wednesday.

The incident took place on Monday when Eboigbodin was traveling with his wife along Upper Sakponba Road.

Reports indicate that he was stopped by police officers who requested to see his vehicle documentation, which he promptly provided.

However, an alleged discrepancy in the documents led to a heated dispute, with police claiming that Eboigbodin was driving a stolen vehicle.

The confrontation escalated when officers demanded that he drive to the station, a request to which Eboigbodin objected, seeking clarity on his alleged infraction.

Witnesses reported that the argument intensified, resulting in Eboigbodin collapsing at the scene.

Subsequently, the police reportedly left, allowing his wife to transport him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

In a statement, the police spokesperson expressed deep concern over Eboigbodin’s death, emphasising the need for an investigation into possible unprofessional conduct by the officers involved.

Commissioner Ozigi also extended his condolences to Eboigbodin’s widow, family, and friends, while reaffirming the police department’s commitment to maintaining a strong rapport with civil society and ensuring accountability in this matter.

“The Command is dedicated to upholding the rule of law and will ensure that justice prevails in this situation,” Yamu stated.
