Famous Hausa dramatist, Umar Danjuma dies, aged 72

A leading Hausa dramatist, Umar Danjuma Kasagi has died at the age of 72. Kasagi was said to have directed for his grave to be prepared two days before his death.

Danjuma Kasagi who retired as Director of History and Culture Bureau, Katsina State was the main character in the former NTA Kaduna famous programme (Kasagi). In fact, when it came from London at that time, NTA Kaduna management was already working on a drama series to be called Kasagi, and later it was adopted after him.

He was also a playwright, he wrote two books, (Kulba da Barna) and (Ga irinta nan) “Kulba da Barna” in particular was produced as a film and it won an International Award, Bilkisu Labaran of BBC Hausa Service then played the lead role in the film.

Kasagi in an interview with Blueprint Newspaper which was published on 12th May 2014 complained bitterly that he was neglected, even though his books won an International Award for the country, the awards were given to Nigeria, not him as a person. He, therefore, bitterly complained that he was neglected
