FAO to distribute Agric inputs to 560,000 IDPs

The Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) will distribute fertilisers, seeds and other inputs to 560,000 displaced persons for dry season farming in North-East.
According to a statement issued on August 25 by Ms. Divya Sama, FAO’s Communications Officer, 70,000 households will receive assorted fertilisers, seeds and tools, to accelerate vegetables and cash crop production. The distribution of the commodities will commence in October.
The programme is being jointly conducted by the Federal Government, United Nations (UN) and other development organizations including the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) as well as Belgium, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States (US).
It is aimed at encouraging displaced farmers to return to the farm and cultivates crops, to mitigate the effects of the food crisis occasioned by the insurgency. It is also designed to improve the nutrition of vulnerable persons and provide a means of livelihood to traumatized farmers in the region.
The program will also address critical challenges confronting farmers, who are experiencing a shortage of agricultural inputs that continue to prolong their reliance on expensive humanitarian assistance.
The dry season program targets vulnerable persons, Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and returnees in host communities. This effort is led by the Government of Nigeria to restore livelihoods and combat critical levels of food insecurity and malnutrition in areas ravaged by the insurgency.
