Farotimi prosecuted, remanded in prison
Human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi’s legal battle took a new turn on Wednesday as the Ado-Ekiti Magistrate Court denied him bail and ordered his remand in prison custody.
Farotimi’s troubles stemmed from a petition filed by prominent legal figure Afe Babalola (SAN), who accused Farotimi of defamation. Babalola claimed that Farotimi’s book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, contained false statements that damaged his reputation.
Farotimi faces charges of defamation and criminally publishing false information with intent to harm. The book specifically accused Babalola and other lawyers of corruptly influencing the Supreme Court.
The court argued that the allegedly false statements could incite public fear, harm reputations, and disturb the peace.
Farotimi’s legal team, headed by Dayo Akeredolu, opposed the remand request and urged the court to grant bail under lenient terms.
However, Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun, presiding over the case, denied the bail application and ordered Farotimi’s remand in prison custody.
The case has been adjourned to December 10, 2024, for further proceedings.
