FCTA in Abuja impounds, crushes 400 commercial motorcycles

In an extensive operation on Thursday, the Joint Task Force Team of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) impounded and subsequently crushed over 400 commercial motorcycles operating illegally within Abuja, the nation’s capital.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that these motorcycles were seized at key locations commonly used by motorcyclists for their unauthorized operations.

These areas included Kpaduma II, Asokoro Extension, Galadimawa near the Primary School, Gudu market, Kabusa junction, and Apo mechanic village.

Mr. Abdulateef Bello, Director of the FCT Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS), stated that this operation was part of the ongoing efforts to remove commercial motorcycles and tricycles from the streets of Abuja.

This initiative aligns with the directive from the FCT Minister, Mr. Nyesom Wike, who has called for greater orderliness on Abuja’s roads.

Bello noted that the DRTS had been diligently enforcing the ban on commercial motorcycles and tricycles within the Abuja metropolis since 2006.

Despite these efforts, operators persistently returned to the roads. The FCTA has now declared a zero-tolerance policy against illegal commercial motorcycle operations.

Earlier in the day, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Commissioner of Police, Garba Haruna, affirmed that this exercise was a reminder that the ban on motorcycles was still in effect.

“FCT residents are well aware that commercial motorcycles have been prohibited from entering the Federal Capital City since 2006. Today’s action, crushing the impounded motorcycles, serves as a clear indication that the city center is off-limits for their operations,” Haruna emphasized.

The commissioner also clarified that motorcyclists were only permitted to operate in the suburbs of the FCT.
