Federal High Court adjourns suit seeking reversal of dismissed pregnant police officer

The Federal High Court in Ado-Ekiti has adjourned until 14 April, a suit filed by Ekiti State against the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) over the dismissal of a pregnant officer.

The Ekiti Attorney General, Wale Fapounda, in the suit, is seeking an order of the court to nullify Section 127 of the Police Act and Regulations, which provides for the discharge from the Police Force female officers who become pregnant while married unofficially.

Joined as co-defendants in the suit are the Ekiti State Commissioner of Police and the Police Service Commission (PSC).

Justice Babs Kuewumi fixed the date after the attorney-general prayed the court for an extension of time to a file motion.

The defendant’s counsel, Femi Falade, did not oppose the application.

Falade told the court that he has a preliminary objection before the court, praying for an adjournment to enable him to react to the reply to the State Government.

The Ekiti State Government filed the suit in February after the police justified its action in dismissing a pregnant constable last year.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the suit also seeks an order of perpetual injunction restraining the IGP, the Ekiti CP, and the PSC from implementing the regulation.
