FG makes emergency vaccine requests as Nigeria battles worsening cholera outbreak

The Federal Government has submitted emergency requests for oral cholera vaccines as part of intensified efforts to curb the ongoing cholera outbreak affecting several states across the country.
According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), the decision followed a rapid rise in infections, with cases reported in more than 30 states and over 100 local government areas. The government is working with Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, to secure doses from the global Oral Cholera Vaccine (OCV) stockpile.

Health officials confirmed that the vaccines, Dukoral, Shanchol, and Euvichol-Plus, all approved by the World Health Organization (WHO), will be deployed immediately upon arrival for reactive vaccination campaigns in high-risk communities. Due to global shortages, the campaigns may rely on single-dose administration to quickly protect large populations.
The Federal Government stated that while vaccines are critical in outbreak response, long-term cholera control will depend on improving water supply, sanitation, and hygiene practices nationwide. Authorities also warned that many communities remain vulnerable because of inadequate access to clean water and proper waste disposal.
Gavi indicated that shipments from the emergency stockpile were already being processed and are expected to arrive in the country shortly. The Ministry of Health reassured Nigerians that the outbreak response will continue even as infection rates show signs of slowing in some regions.

The government urged states and local councils to strengthen public awareness, enhance surveillance, and ensure early reporting of suspected cases to prevent further spread.
