FG moves to stop exit of Facebook, WhatsApp from Nigeria
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) accused Meta of violating Nigeria’s competition and data protection rules, leading to a potential $220 million fine.
The National Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has confirmed ongoing talks with Meta and WhatsApp to address concerns that prompted Meta to threaten exiting the Nigerian market.
These discussions follow accusations by the FCCPC that Meta breached Nigeria’s competition and data protection regulations.
NDPC Commissioner Dr. Vincent Olatunji highlighted the commission’s approach, stating, “The Commission is approaching the situation with the goal of partnership, not confrontation.”

He emphasised the focus on finding solutions that satisfy both parties, ensuring no complete fallout.
Olatunji remains optimistic about reaching a workable agreement, noting that political avenues are available to handle such disagreements.
The talks come after the FCCPC imposed a $220 million fine on Meta, alleging abuse of Nigerian users’ data. Meta has disputed the decision and plans to appeal.
